In my youth I always wanted to become a writer of novels. Sometimes I would have a captivating picture in my head (perhaps from a dream) and I felt the urge to create a story around it.
Before I started studying at University I even published a short story. However, during my studies I never seemed to find the time to write and lost inspiration. I did further develop the habit of being very precise (which goes with my job) which probably already was innate.
I remember as a child when I was collecting shells-which I still display in a cabinet today- I got books from the library to determine them. I made little cards on a typewriter (no computers in those days) and tried to catalogue them.
Once my life was settled with my work as a pharmacist, a home and a family, I felt the need to find my creativity again.
Somewhere around 2009 I attended a short course in pottery. I thought working with my hands might be a good idea because I could create something in a limited amount of time. I enjoyed the process of decorating the pottery especially. Afterwards I tried out acrylics on canvas at home and found this to be really satisfying and also exciting.
Once I started painting, I started to see the world around me in a whole different light. I became much more visually focused and payed much more attention to small details.
My interest in arts grew accordingly.
I love to get inspired by other artists and also collect art when there is enough space on my wall. I try to visit big art fairs when I can but also galleries.
Other sources of inspiration for me are nature, our garden and my daughter growing up into a young woman. I admire Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
My works are acrylics/mixed media on canvas or board. Realistic, sometimes combined with more graphic elements.
I aim to bring a mood of brightness and also peacefulness in to my paintings.
It's what I feel when I paint and the process seems to be working itself out.
Often in my work there are bursts of color (as there are in nature itself) and I am inclined to use metallic colors as background or in smaller details.
My subjects are personal. I use (combinations of) reference photos made by me or my husband. My portraits are a collaboration of my small family in which my daughter is the model, I designate the scene and my husband is the photographer. Many credits to them both.
When I approach the completion of a painting I enjoy the anticipation of the next one, where it will take me and what I will learn. It's a world of possibilities that lies in front of me which is a great asset to my life.
