Art James is a self taught artist and published author who works and resides in San Diego, California. Art James is the Pseudonym used by Jim Childers under which he paints and writes. Jim was born in Ozark Alabama on an Army base, the son of a career military man. Jim was the CEO/owner of a medical diagnostics and imaging company for 17 years. Jim was also the majority owner of a professional football team for 2 years during the same time period. Jim’s company was destroyed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina. Jim Childers (Art James) is also proud to be a veteran of the United States Army.
A traumatic brain injury left bullet fragments in his brain as well as leaving him paralyzed on the left side of his body. Jim’s recovery and rehabilitation was made more difficult as he is naturally left handed. After 2 years of rehabilitation Jim made a near complete recovery. Jim was soon surprised to discover that after his brain injury and recovery he had somehow acquired a new skill; Painting. Since Katrina had suddenly afforded Jim a surplus of free time he began to focus on his art and writing after his rehabilitation.
“I have always loved the vibrant colors and lights created and displayed by nature. As a child and into adulthood I spent countless hours studying reference books pertaining to nature in the broadest sense of the word. A catastrophic brain injury left me paralyzed on the left side of my body for over two years. I first began holding a brush and painting as a part of my rehabilitation therapy. I soon discovered that I could create images similar to those I so admired. Although I have worked with many types of artistic media, I am and will always be drawn to watercolor. I love its fluid nature. The flowing together of colors, creating movement, new colors as well as a life of its own is what I love most. Painting in watercolor has helped me see the world around me in many different lights as well as being a soothing therapy for maintaining a relaxed inner peace. Taking the time to look at what gives me peace and joy and then bringing that to life on paper or canvas gives me a greater appreciation of the world’s extreme varieties of colors, lights and life.”
Art James is an emerging artist, working primarily in watercolors. He is expanding upon the new genre of art that he has created; NONSENSICAL REALISM. He often employs a combination of layering bold colors and intricate details motivated by a desire to combine subjective impressionism with an objective statement of the obvious within the borders of the same painting.
Jim moved to San Diego California in 2012 to devote himself full time to his painting and writing. Soon after moving to San Diego, Jim met artist and art teacher Belen Jacot. Belen and Jim have been inseparable since that day.
